So how many of you have heard folks say that fat people shouldn’t wear “loud” colors, or prints, or stripes (vertical or horizontal), or anything with sequins? I guess if it it were up to these fashion “experts”, fat people would be relegated to a cave with curtains for clothing. It’s time to flout fashion “conventions” by wearing whatever makes you feel fabulous. Step out of your comfort zone and embrace all of your lumps and bumps! It’s not about proving naysayers wrong–it’s about learning to love yourself and your fashion choices. You like stripes? Rock ‘em fearlessly! You want to wear sequins? Wear them and own the confidence they help you to exude. If anyone looks at you with that “oh no she didn’t” face (you know the one). You shoot them a look that says “oh yes I did and I could show you a thing or two!” My outfit was inspired by the “oh no she didn’t” folks. The folks that want to steal your “glow” by telling you what you should and shouldn’t wear. These floral pants aren’t something I would normally opt for but they made me feel like a Goddess. And that’s what matters right? Yup, oh yes I did.

I can never wait for May to begin. It’s well and truly a party month- there are so many girlfriends with birthdays in May that work literally gives up on us with all our requested days off! On the weekend just gone, my girlfriends and I started the month off with some cocktails and dancing in the city!

Skirt: City Chic

Top: City Chic

Stockings: We Love Colors

Necklace: Colette

I’m a bit in love with this skirt- it’s so easy to wear and looks good with everything- plus it is so easily dressed up. The rocking necklace I picked up in a mad 50% off sale at Colette, it’s so luxe I can’t get enough of it. And as for the shoes, I know, I know, major fashion faux pas. I had some killer Betts shoes on at dinner but it was the first wear and I just couldn’t go the dancing distance in them. All I had in the car to change into was these- my work crocs! Shame!!

I’m looking forward to some crazy good times this month! Do you have a favourite time of year for shenanigans????

April is Makeover Month here on Skorch, and I wanted to do my own makeover post before the month was over. This year is flying by, isn’t it? Crazy!

Anyway, April has been a somewhat rough month for me personally. I usually try to put together fab outfits, but it just hasn’t been happening much this month. However, during blah times like these, I’ve often found that the best way to makeover my schlumpy grumpies is by, yep you guessed it, wearing amazing shoes. Sometimes, a great pair of shoes is all a girl needs to brighten her day and put a spring in her step.

Ironically this week I’ve had two ladies to contact me in regards on how to get started in the plus-size modeling business. The best advice I could give them was to attend events such as Full Figured Fashion Week™ in New York next month. Full Figured Fashion Week™ is an event covered over a few days that will give plus-size women the info they need to get started, be it in fashion, modeling or blogging. This will be the 4th year and more events are added every time. But back to the subject at hand. When I started out modeling back in 2005, I traveled near and far for my training. That’s right ladies, it’s not gonna come to your doorstep. This business is a sacrifice and you must be determined. I have spent thousands of dollars traveling to and attending events but that’s not to discourage you. If I hadn’t had that drive and determination, I wouldn’t be in the position that I am now. I started out by attending one-day bootcamps such as “The Full Figured Diva Academy” here in Richmond and also Gwen DeVoe’s “Project Curves” in Atlanta, Ga. By living in Virginia not much was going on here and at that time, thanks to Myspace, I was able to keep in the know with all current events. Gwen DeVoe, who is CEO of Full Figured Fashion Week™, also had other programs such as “The Plus Academy” and “Full Figured and Fabulous”. Believe you me, I attended all. Be it in New York, DC, Atlanta or Charlotte, North Carolina. You see ladies that’s how you get ahead in this business. You stay in the know, attend as many events as possible and know all the key players. Which brings me to this, and I’m about to give you some VALUABLE info here. If you can attend this years Full Figured Fashion Week™, in addition to going to all the wonderful events, follow these valuable tips:

- Have business cards with all of your current info (such as name, email, phone number, facebook and twitter pages, website, etc.). Or better yet, make your self stand out even more by having personalized ink pens, notepads or magnets made up with your info on them to pass out to others. People won’t forget you as quickly if they’re writing with your product.

- Learn all of your top plus-size designers and brands (Jibri, Monif C, Simply Be, Torrid, Sonsi, Carmakoma, IGIGI, etc.). Wouldn’t hurt if you wore their designs too. Cameras are always flashing at these type of events!

- Mingle with (and google beforehand) to get to know key people in the plus-size community, such as:

Gwen DeVoe, CEO of Full Figured Fashion Week™

Madeline Jones, CEO of Plus Model Magazine

So I’m declaring this week plus size swimsuit week on my blog. As of yesterday, Dallas heat hit 95 degrees. Side Eye! It will be another scorching summer, not to worry though as long as I have my AC & the pool right down stairs. My long time readers know that I buy three swimsuits every summer. I plan to show them off all this week.

Outfit Logistics: Swim Top – Old Navy $34, Swim Bottom – Lane Bryant $50. Skirt – Asos (similar), Belt – Forever21 $3, Lipstick – YSL Lipstick Rosy Coral #052 $30

I’ve been trying to accomplish the plus size bikini for two years now. First time was a fail — I tried to order via etsy and it was just a disaster (badly made). This year I’ve have 2 bikinis and 1 whole piece. The bikini presents the obvious plus size issues, but for me being an 16/18 on top and a 24/26 on bottom presents an even bigger dilemma. The plus size two bikini is a new concept for companies, so often time you cannot buy the top and bottom separate in two different sizes. I actually loved the Monifc Black 2 piece, but I knew I needed to buy the top and bottom in two different sizes. In the country we say there is more than one way to skin a cat. And there is! I ordered the high waist bottoms from Lane Bryant and the top is from Old Navy and put together my own plus size bikini. I must say the bottom from Lane Bryant is perfect. It has a nice thickness and it’s firm for keeps everything in check. I thought this skirt from Asos would make the perfect pool side cover up. I added a belt from Forever21 that is practically plastic, only cost me $3, and it’s a perfect swimsuit add on. Warning – do not jump in the pool with your leather belt…LOL…only cheap plastic ones.

And shout out to Gabi from in her “Fatkini” she looked adorable! Check her out here. Anyone plan on trying the plus size bikini this year?

These days you can’t turn your head without someone flashing their designer-status-symbol-label at you. Clothing, handbags, cell phones, shoes, cars…. No matter what it is, it’s got some sort of label emblazoned across it, making sure everyone knows how awesome and trendy the owner is.

I wish I could say I have always been above these labels, but when I was a teenager, I too wanted nothing more than that perfect Guess triangle stamped on the rear of my jeans.

Somewhere along my journey from adolescent to adult I thankfully let go of my obsession with labels, generally preferring the vintage, eclectic choices that do not broadcast to the masses. Yet, recently while reading the latest Glamour.com article “Weight Stereotyping: The Secret Way People Are Judging You Based on Your Body”, I had an epiphany. I hadn’t actually kicked my label dependence after all. Instead of the Superficial Label Junkie I once was, I’d turned my obsession inward.

We all know about the negative labels described by Galmour.com that cause pain and suffering, but I’m recently convinced that positive labels can hurt us just as much.

How often do we put our lives and happiness on hold until we finally receive the external validation we need. Convinced that until someone, anyone, “labels” us we’ll never be content.

Successful, creative, accomplished, brilliant, entertaining, professional writer, artist, once I overcame my outer label dependence these were the new labels I began to crave. I felt if I could earn the right to own these words, I’d be the person I was meant to be. That opportunities, recognition and personal success would only come once my worth was labeled and recognizable to others.

I was wrong.

Just as we condemn being defined by negative labels, we should not wait for positive labels to define ourselves either.

About a year ago I realized I wanted to be a writer, so with that label in mind I started writing, and a funny thing happened.

The more words I wrote, the more comfortable I became with the idea of calling myself a writer. Then slowly I began telling others I was a writer. Then before I knew it I felt the label of writer become a part of who I was. It didn’t come from waiting. It didn’t come from others. It came from ME and the actions I took.

And by taking action and getting closer to the label I thought I needed, I realized I was MORE THAN JUST A LABEL! I was strong and brave and willing to take action to achieve my goals. Label or no label, I am content in knowing I am on the path to achieving my goals.

So, what’s your label? Are you willing to take the steps to be MORE THAN JUST A LABEL?

Australian label, LaLa Belle, has just released a few pics from their Autumn/Winter 2012 Collection. Every woman wants to dress to look her best – no matter what size or shape. But right now there simply aren’t as many options for bigger sizes. So at LaLa Belle they’ve decided to do something about it.

They’re inspired by the same trendy, classy, super-glamorous looks that all girls are – and they’re using those inspirations to design high quality, ultra-stylish looks for full-figured women.

Salutations Skorch readers! Thanks for reading my debut blog! Before any confusion ensues; I will be the gal who adds a “B” to her outfits, since I am the resident plus cycle-chic I wear pretty things while riding my bike!

CoCo knew a thing or two about fashion, there’s no questioning that, but you think she ever considered herself a cycling advocate? Probably not, but I need to thank her for these words. I was in doubt…I wore red….POWER SURGE! I had been a bit down in the dumps as of late, and it seems all I really needed to do was wear a new outfit, gussy up, and hit the streets on SD
